ROZZANO (MI) WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT

The project, led by CAP HOLDING S.p.A. at the Rozzano (MI) wastewater treatment plant, is part of a broader program to modernize and convert the existing treatment plant into a multifunctional bio-platform based on the principles of the circular economy.

The project involves the construction of a new section dedicated to the reception, inspection, and dosing of special liquid waste, with a treatment capacity of 104,000 metric tons per year, to be fed into the biological treatment section of the existing plant.

At the same time, the project includes the recovery of packaged food waste that is no longer suitable for the normal distribution chain or for food banks (such as yogurt, milk, soft drinks, and similar products that have expired or spoiled) by processing them in the anaerobic digestion line already in place at the facility. This section, with a capacity of 3,000 metric tons per year, will increase biogas production for on-site consumption, generating the thermal energy needed to power the digester and consequently reducing reliance on fossil fuels, such as natural gas from the grid.

Overall, the project provides for a treatment capacity of 107,000 metric tons per year and represents a significant step toward transforming the wastewater treatment plant into an integrated facility capable of combining wastewater treatment with material recovery and renewable energy production, thereby contributing to improved plant efficiency and the environmental sustainability of the region.
