EXPERIMENTAL PLANT FOR THE ENERGY RECOVERY FROM SEWAGE SLUDGE

 

The project developed for MM S.p.A. involved the study and design of a new experimental section for the energy recovery of sewage sludge through thermal oxidation, with the goal of identifying a sustainable solution capable of reducing dependence on external facilities for sludge recovery and disposal.

The project involved the construction of a pilot plant, with a capacity of 1,825 metric tons per year, designed to test various methods of feeding the sludge—which has varying moisture content—in order to assess its technical, operational, and environmental feasibility. The study also explored opportunities for energy recovery through thermal oxidation and for phosphorus recovery from the resulting ash, transforming a waste material into a resource for the fertilizer industry.

The project represented an important step toward a more efficient and sustainable model for managing sewage sludge, promoting the recovery of energy and materials in accordance with the principles of the circular economy.
